Michaels Italian Job

Hello, and welcome to my blog. I'm 30, and as you may have guessed from my blog's title, I'm working in Italy. Genova to be precise. I've been here since June 2008 and don't know when I'm going back to Scotland, if ever. I went to America a couple of years ago and wrote a lot of waffle. Y'know......stuff, lots of

Ciao tutti

Apologies for my not posting in a while, I realise that your lives have probably become dull and meaningless in the meantime. But never fear, I'm here to spread a little Italian sunshine into your otherwise (mostly) cloudy Scottish lives!

Famous talented-types might excuse this absence by saying they'd been on an artistic break (i.e. rehab). Sadly, I'm not one of the aforementioned glitterati, or in need of rehab because I'M IN CONTROL AND DON'T NEED ANY HELP! But naw, only joking. Instead my only excuse, if you don't mind me speaking frankly, is because I haven't been arsed. Also, after my exhilerating brush with fame in the last episode, I've found the soul-crushing descent to 'normo' status, well, soul-crushing. But as my good showbiz friend, the fat one from Atomic Kitten who likes coke, always tells me: "stay strong Michael." Wise words indeed.

So, in order to fill you in on the ups, downs and roundabouts since last time, I'll talk about the following subjects:

Football (of course)
Flat news
General mundanity
Dinners
Upcoming attractions

So, football-wise you've missed quite a lot. After last time Genoa were flying high in the league, but since then we had a wee blip. This was highlighted in a home game with Inter, which we lost triumphantly 5-0, including conceding a goal from almost the half way line. To be honest, I'd taken precautions to avoid this, as was pretty drunk at kick off, didn't feel any better at half time when we were 3-0 down, and left when they scored their 4th. However, at the end of the game, the players were still given a standing ovation by the hardcore remaining many. This, I like.
Also, we've been picking it up again in Serie A, and are now 5th I think, just behind the hated fluke-merchants of Sampdoria. Two or three weeks ago we played Fiorentina here, and before the game there was a bit of a problem at the turnstile I use and it wouldn't open. Cue lots of shouting, gesticulating, and general "eheheh-ing". Eventually (after about 10 minutes) people started to climb the fence outside while the stewards and police inside just watched. To stop this, they opened a wee door in the fence, and everyone piled through, which would have been exciting had I not been defecating myself quite so violently.
Then the week after we played Lille here in the Europa League. We were cruising at 2-0, contrived to let them score an equaliser with about 5 minutes left, and then brillaintly scored the winner in injury time. The place went M E N T A L, and when I was leaving I didn't know if my legs were shaking because of the cold or because I was about to have a heart attack from excitement. To reiterate, it was awesome.

Life in the flat is pretty good, with everyone getting on well. As I apparently enjoy making life that wee bit more awkward than it should be, I started going out with Heidi. This all got a bit strange for me though as I used to go out with Katarina, and all of us staying the same flat was a recipe for uncomfortableness. Now we are no longer, and happily everyone seems to get on ok, which is the optimum result I think.

In terms of mundanity, it's much the same. But then again, if mundanity had changed into something new, it probably wouldn't be mundane, would it? Answers on a postcard to the usual address.
I'm working loads just now, which is very nice as it means I'll probably be able to pay off my friends at HBOS and RBS by about March, which is a very positive feeling. Continuing in the banking theme, I'm opening a bank account here which I'm quite pleased about for reasons twofold: 1) I spoke to the bank guy for about 25 minutes and was both understood, and understanding of him. And 2) I think it kind of legitimises me here, as in I'm no longer just a free-loading foreigner without a bank account; I'm now a bona fide free-loading foreigner with a bank account. The distinction seems small, but is actually rather large.
At the weekend I was pretty ill, with a fever, tap-for-a-nose, and a good healthy cough that a chain-smoking alsatian would be proud of. Feel a bit better now, but not quite 100 percent.
I should give a big virtual high-5 to Patrick, as he let me play football with him and his pals a few times, but unfortunately I've not been able to get time off work/enough money together to go back. It was really good, and I also rode on a scooter for the first time over here, which was in equal measures, cold, exciting and scary. I would really like to get one for myself.

Katarina and myself have been quite the entertainers, having had some friends round for dinner a couple of times. The food has been excellent, and, needless to say, the banter stilted and awkward. But the food, oh, the food. Those who live in my parents house should look forward to my chocolate brownie cake and it's saliva and diabetes inducing greatness for Christmas. Yes, that's right, rather than give you an actual gift, I gift you the gift that never leaves you, diabetes. Enjoy!

The rather grandly titled 'Upcoming Attractions' is basically one city, two trips. This weekend I'm going to Prague to help toast my former partner-in-wine, Stevie, 's birthday. He'll be the big 30, so in the interests of making it a memorable one we intend to drink until we can't remember anything. I'm writing my hostels address on to my forearm in marker pen in anticipation! I'll also meet Debbie, my sister, and her husband-to-be, Jacub, as the following weekend I'll be making the return trip to Prague to see them get married, which will be really nice. I'm very proud of my little sister, and hopefully she reads this as I'm not getting her a wedding present as I think international (albeit only internet blog-based) recognition is priceless. So, I'll be in Prague this weekend, leave for 3 days, and then go back again. Truly a jetset lifestyle!

I'll try not to leave you hanging on so long next time chums and chumettes,

Until then

Ciao :)
